# 3-D Secure

3-D Secure is an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions. Originally developed by Visa under the name "Verified by Visa", the protocol has been adopted and used by other major card schemes under various names (e.g., MasterCard Identity Check, Visa Secure, American Express SafeKey, Discover ProtectBuy, etc.). It is designed to authenticate cardholders and reduce fraudulent purchases by verifying the cardholder at the time of the transaction.

As a merchant or business, implementing 3-D Secure into your payment process can help provide a safer online shopping experience for your customers and potentially reduce chargebacks associated with fraud.
